Low cards favour the house in vingt-et-un and high cards favour the gambler.
Low cards favor the dealer because they help him acquire winning totals on his hands when she is stiff (has a twelve, thirteen, 14, 15, or sixteen total on her first two cards).
In casino 21, you can stand on your stiffs if you want to, but the casino cannot.
The dealer has no choice to make, but you do and this is your edge. The rules of playing twenty-one require that dealers hit stiffs no matter how rich the deck is in high cards that will break her.
The high cards favor the player because they may bust the house when she hits her stiffs and also because both tens and Aces mean blackjacks.
Although blackjacks are, equally allocated between the house and the player, the fact is that the gambler gets paid more (3:2) when she gets a blackjack so the player has an edge.
You do not have to tally the numbers of each of the individual card in order to know when you have an advantage over the dealer.
You only need to know when the shoe is rich or reduced in high cards and you can boost your action when the expectation is in your favour.
This is a simple breakdown of how card-counting systems work, but gives you an understanding into how the rationale works.

I have enjoyed millions of rounds of 21. I began working my way into the gambling halls when I was 16. I have played online twenty-one, I have counted cards, and worked with a team for a short time. With all that said I have still lost all kinds of money at vingt-et-un. The gambling halls have made it very hard to beat the casino.
I still enjoy the game and gamble on a regular basis. Over this time period I have bet on a type of blackjack called "The Take it Leave it Method". You will not get loaded with this method or defeat the house, still you will have a lot of fun. This method is built on the idea that vingt-et-un seems to be a match of streaks. When you’re on fire your hot, and when you’re not you’re NOT!
I play basic strategy vingt-et-un. When I lose I bet the table minimum on the next hand. If I don’t win again I wager the lowest amount allowed on the next hand again etc. Once I win I take the payout paid to me and I bet the original bet again. If I win this hand I then keep in play the winnings paid to me and now have double my original wager on the table. If I succeed again I take the winnings paid to me, and if I succeed the next hand I leave it for a total of 4 times my original bet. I continue wagering this way "Take it Leave it etc". Once I lose I lower the bet back down to the original bet.
I am very strict and do not "chicken out". It gets very fun on occasion. If you succeed at a few hands in a row your bets go up very quick. Before you know it you are gambling $100-200per hand. I have had great streaks a few times now. I departed a $5 table at the Paris a couple of years ago with $750 after 60 mins using this technique! And a number of months ago in Vegas I left a table with $1200!
You must comprehend that you can relinquish much faster this way too!. But it really makes the game more enjoyable. And you will be surprised at the streaks you notice gamble this way. Here is a chart of what you would wager if you kept winning at a 5 dollar game.
Wager 5 dollar
Take 5 dollar paid-out to you, leave the original 5 dollar bet
Bet 5 dollar
Leave five dollar paid-out to you for a total bet of 10 dollar
Bet $10
Take 10 dollar paid-out to you, leave the first ten dollar wager
Bet $10
Leave ten dollar paid to you for a total bet of $20
Bet twenty dollar
Take $20 paid-out to you, leave the first twenty dollar bet
Wager $20
Leave $20 paid to you for a total bet of $40
Bet forty dollar
Take $40 paid to you, leave the initial forty dollar wager
Wager $40
Leave forty dollar paid-out to you for a total bet of eighty dollar
Bet 80 dollar
Take $80 paid-out to you, leave the original 80 dollar wager
Bet 80 dollar
Leave $80 paid to you for a total bet of one hundred and sixty dollar
Bet 160 dollar
Take $160 paid to you, leave the initial 160 dollar bet
If you left at this moment you would be up $315 !!
It’s difficult to go on a run this long, but it often happen. And when it does you can’t alter and lower your wager or the final result won’t be the same.
